A three-photograph series investigating a boys fantasies that never die.
In my digital photography class, we had to developed two photographs that played with the idea of fact and fiction. It was up to the photographer to play with those boundaries and see if the viewer could distinguish between the two.
I worked with Zach Blas and his designer Kristel Brinshot to help develop his website for ‘Queer Technologies.’ Since then, I designed a simple yet open business card.
Commissioned by UCLA Art|Sci department, Willem Henri Lucas and myself developed a 58 page catalogue showing the 07-08 Art|Activism posters. The concept of the book continues the activism aspect of all the posters created by having a ‘wheat paste’ concept where the posters continuously overlap for each series. The catalogue was digitally printed by Typecraft Wood & Jones, Inc.
This project was initiated while i was interning at the San Francisco branding firm, Markatos Moore. Working with the principals Tyler Moore and Peter Markatos, we developed an identity system for the oldest theater in San Francisco, The Roxie Theater. Pulling from the historic past, we kept the identity system black and white while integrating the idea that everything is continuous. The business cards to the letter head allowed continuous stacking. The logo developed from the iconic neon sign located outside of the theater while the body type came from a typeface as close as possible to a typewriter.
Tiffany Huang and myself developed the identity system for the 2009 Department of Design Media Arts Graduate Show which transcended onto their website and posters printed on newsprint, which due to their fold, if cut on one side would become a book.
Tiffany and myself developed the 2009 undergraduate show for the Department of Design Media Arts. Probably the biggest project while in school, we created the identity for the show. A collaboration with Willem Henri Lucas and myself won an 365: AIGA Year in Design 28 award for our publicity posters. Beyond that, we also collected and currated all of the work in the show that lead to a co-decision of four students winning a scholarship with the senate faculty. With a performance by Gravy Train!!! in collaboration with UCLA Campus Events Commission and a two day lecture series with: Imaginary Forces, National Forest, Beautiful Decay, Left Field Labs, MFG Productions and Grand Jete.
My first project with David Martin Porras to create a DVD and poster for his film ‘Ida y Vuelta.’ We created two sets of everything in English and Spanish. The cover developed from the typography of a plane ticket while attempting to use an image to the fullest extent. I wanted to play with the idea of him being seperated so the image folds over to the back in an unexpected way. Once the film started entering in film festivals, we created a simple ‘postcard’ that was in the format of a plane ticket and the part that perferated was a business card for future use. The film was a final selection of the 2009 SXSW Film Festival and the printed matter was displayed at the SXSW Film/AIGA Austin Movie Poster Gallery Show.
In collaboration with Tiffany Huang. An ongoing project in collaboration with UCLA Art|Sci Department which throws a quarter mixer with North and South Campus. The themes of the cards always relate to a general idea of each mixer and the location of each mixer (North or South.)
Identity system for UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture for their annual honors reception. Here is the invitation card used to invite all of the guests to the event. As you opened the card you were exposed to greater depth about the departments within the school until you open to the final invitation.
The Date of Birth project consisted of in-depth research on the day of our birth, collecting information locally, nationally and globally. Based on our research, we were to create a 3 poster series, giving our research meaning and a hand-made process book. My posters took the idea of local, national and global literally by the sources of information and all of the main subject matter consisted of life and death.
Satisfaction is a 34-second stop-motion clip. The piece portrays the effect of the media and the environment people live in today. There seems to be an universal idea that there is this ‘ideal’ body that people must achieve, whether through dieting, exercise or plastic surgery. In the clip, this women is surrounded by printed media and soon begins to dream about a new body.
Everything is Illuminated is a 3-minute based on the feature film and novel ‘Everything is Illuminated.’ I edited down the original movie to 3-minutes and redirected three major scenes in the movie while attempting to have every scene stand alone as a photograph. The final clip was selected to play in the Design|Media Arts Fall 2008 ‘Video/Sound’ series.
A project dealing with semiotics and photography in my Communications Class 154B, under Willem Henri Lucas. The project consisted of comparing two photographers, mine being William Eggleston and August Sanders visually, referentially, and typographically. My final Project consisted of a hand-sewn, 100pg color-catagorized book and 4 oversized posters.
The first major project I did with UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture. I had to create a printed appeal that used the same format from the previous year. The appeal consisted of 6 printed letters, one for each department.
Commissioned by Willem Henri Lucas and Paul Barbera, I developed a series of printed posters that are folded down to a standard postcard size to allow Paul to send updated work to clients, friends and family.
